Melrose Avenue Surface Parking Lot
CLIENT: UNIVERSITY OF IOWA
Project Description: In Spring 2012, Anderson Bogert was hired by the University of Iowa to design a new surface parking lot along Melrose Avenue, immediately south of the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics complex. The design process began in February 2012 and required completion in just four months.
The University of Iowa is beginning an aggressive construction schedule to build a new children’s hospital on their main campus. In order to facilitate this schedule, the Melrose Avenue Surface Parking lot needed to be designed and constructed within 10 months. This expedited schedule allowed the university to demolish an existing parking ramp in preparation for hospital construction.
The new surface parking lot provides for approximately 290 parking stalls. Nine University-owned properties were demolished in preparation for the project. The project featured a high level of landscaping, relocation of a historic barn, repaving of an adjacent street, utility upgrades, storm sewer, and an underground storm sewer detention basin.
The project was completed within the short design/construction schedule and within the allowed budget.
